EPS
 
[Abk. für Encapsulated PostScript (File), dt. »eingekapselte PostScript-Datei«], ein Dateiformat, das auf der Seitenbeschreibungssprache PostScript aufbaut und zur Einbindung in Anwendungen konzipiert ist. Die Bezeichnung »eingekapselt« bezieht sich darauf, dass der ursprüngliche PostScript-Code zwischen einen Prolog und einen Trailer (dt. »Nachspann«) gestellt ist, die zusätzliche, für die Einbindung benötigte Ressourcen bereitstellen.
 
Der Prolog enthält u. a. Informationen über Erstellungsprogramm, Seitenformat und -anzahl, Breite und Höhe des bedruckbaren Bereichs sowie die verwendeten Schriften (die Schriftinformation findet sich manchmal auch im Trailer). Wenn das Dokument ein Bild enthält, kann im Prolog eine sog. Vorschau (engl. preview) in geringer Auflösung abgelegt werden. Da DTP-Programme meist nur Prolog und Trailer für die Bildschirmanzeige verwenden (DTP), kann man nur mithilfe dieser - meist im TIFF-Format (TIFF) gespeicherten - Vorschau das Bild beim Layouten am Monitor darstellen. Die Vorschau muss allerdings bereits beim Speichern eines EPS-Dokuments erzeugt werden.
 
Der Trailer dient dazu, nach dem Drucken den ursprünglichen Zustand der Datei (vor dem Dateiaufruf) wieder herzustellen.
 
 
Das EPS-Format ist v. a. bei Grafiken sehr speicheraufwendig - dasselbe Bild nimmt als EPS bis zu 30-mal mehr Speicherplatz ein als im PDF-Format (PDF).
